Worktop Respray vs Replacement

Two very different amounts of disruption for a similar look.

A worktop respray starts from around €400 and is done in a day with the worktop left in place. Replacement means disconnecting the sink and hob, removing the old top, templating and fitting a new one, at several times the cost and with the kitchen out of use for longer.

What a respray can and cannot do

It changes the colour and pattern of the surface, including a convincing granite effect, and it removes the dated speckled look of 1990s and 2000s laminate.

It does not change the shape or thickness of the worktop, and it cannot rescue board that has swollen with water around a sink.

When replacement is right

Swollen board, deep burns or a cracked joint mean the substrate itself has failed, and a finish over that is money wasted.

Wanting a different profile or a genuine stone edge detail is also a replacement job rather than a resurfacing one.

Doing it with the cabinets

Booking the worktop in the same visit as a cabinet respray is cheaper than two separate jobs, because the masking and set up only happen once.

It also means the colours are chosen together rather than one having to work around the other.
