Respraying Vinyl Wrapped Kitchen Doors

The fix for wrap that has started to lift at the edges.

Vinyl wrapped doors can be resprayed. Where the wrap is sound it is degreased, keyed and primed with a bonding primer before coating. Where it has lifted or peeled, usually beside the oven or dishwasher, the loose wrap is removed and the MDF beneath is sealed first so the finish stays flat.

Why wrap lifts in the first place

Vinyl wrap is heat bonded to MDF. Years of steam and heat from an oven, a dishwasher or a kettle break that bond down, and the wrap starts to peel at the nearest edge.

Once it has started it does not stop, because every wash cycle pushes more moisture behind the lifted edge.

Spraying versus rewrapping

Rewrapping puts the same material back in the same conditions that failed it. A sprayed coating is bonded chemically through a primer rather than heat bonded as a film.

It also means you are no longer limited to the wrap patterns available, so any colour is on the table.
