Respraying Thermofoil Kitchen Doors

Same family as vinyl wrap, same solution, done properly.

Thermofoil doors are resprayable. The foil surface is degreased and keyed, then given a bonding primer before the colour coats. Where heat from an oven or dishwasher has caused the foil to peel, that section is removed and the board beneath sealed and filled so the finished face is flat.

How to tell what you have

Thermofoil looks like a painted door until you find an edge. Look at the back edge beside a hinge and you will usually see a thin film layer over board rather than solid timber.

If any part has curled away from the board, it is thermofoil or vinyl wrap rather than sprayed timber or MDF.

The preparation

Peeling sections are taken back to sound material, filled and sanded flat. The whole door is then degreased and keyed.

A bonding primer suited to the surface goes on before colour, which is what stops the coating sitting on top of the foil rather than gripping it.
