Solid oak kitchens respray beautifully. The doors are degreased, sanded and given a grain filling primer where a completely flat finish is wanted, or a standard bonding primer where you prefer a little of the grain texture to remain. Honey oak to soft grey or sage green is one of the most common transformations we do in Dublin.
Grain, and how much of it to keep
Oak has an open grain. Coat it straight and the texture stays visible through the colour, which many people like because it keeps the character of real timber.
If you want the flat, factory look of a modern door instead, the grain is filled and sanded before priming. Both are valid, and it is your call at quote stage.
The transformation people are after
Orange toned honey oak dates a room faster than almost anything else. A soft grey, warm off white or sage green over it changes the whole feel of the house.
The units themselves are usually excellent. Solid oak kitchens were built to last, which is exactly why respraying rather than replacing makes sense.
Is it reversible?
Realistically, no. Once oak is primed and coated, going back to bare timber means stripping and sanding every door.
If the timber itself is something you love, that is worth sitting with before booking.
