Is spray granite waterproof around the sink?

Yes. The finish is sealed and the cut out edges are sealed as part of the job, so splashes and spills around the sink do no harm. Keep the silicone bead in good condition and water cannot get underneath.

Can I put a wet dish rack on it?

You can. Standing water will not soak into the sealed coat, though drying the area is still good practice on any worktop.

Will it survive a leak under the sink?

The finish will, but a chipboard core will swell if water sits underneath for weeks. Fix a leak quickly and the worktop is fine.

A sprayed granite effect worktop is sealed with a hard wearing clear coat that is waterproof in normal kitchen use. Spills, splashes around the sink and everyday wiping do it no harm. What it cannot survive is water sitting in an unsealed joint or behind a loose sink edge, which is why the sealing around sinks and cut outs is done carefully.

What the sealed coat actually does

The stone effect is built up in layers and then sealed with a clear protective coat. That top coat is what water meets, and it repels it the same way a modern floor lacquer does.

Wipe a spill and there is nothing left behind. Standing water around the drainer overnight will not soak in either, though drying it is still the sensible habit.

Where water does cause problems

The weak point on any worktop is the joint: around the sink, at a cut out, or where an old laminate top meets an upstand. If water gets underneath through a gap, the chipboard core swells no matter what finish is on top.

That is why we check and seal those edges before coating and why a worktop already swollen from a long standing leak is one we tell you to replace rather than coat.

Keeping it watertight

Wipe the area around the sink at the end of the day and keep an eye on the silicone bead where the worktop meets the sink and the wall. Replacing tired silicone is a ten minute job that protects everything under it.

Avoid bleach and abrasive creams on the surface. Warm water with a little washing up liquid is all it needs.
