How to Fix Chipped Cabinet Paint
Repairing knocks and chips on painted cabinet doors without redoing the kitchen.
Small chips in cabinet paint are fixed by cleaning the area, lightly sanding the chip edge smooth, filling any dent with a fine filler, spot priming and then applying the matching topcoat in thin coats. If several chips sit on the same door face, recoating the whole door gives a far less visible repair than patching.
Step by step for a single chip
Work slowly. Most bad repairs come from rushing the sanding stage.
- Degrease the area with a mild cleaner and let it dry fully
- Feather the edge of the chip with fine abrasive so there is no ridge
- Fill any dent in the board with a fine surface filler and sand flat
- Spot prime the bare area, especially on MDF or laminate
- Apply the topcoat in two or three thin coats rather than one thick one
When a touch up will always show
On a flat door face in side light, a patch repair almost always catches the eye because the sheen differs slightly. Chips on an edge or inside a frame hide much better. If the damage is on a visible flat face, recoating the full door is the cleaner answer, and it can be done in place.
Preventing the next one
Most chips happen around handles, at the bin door and at the corner nearest the walkway. Soft close hinges, felt bumpers and handles that sit slightly proud all reduce the damage. Keep a small amount of the topcoat after any respray so future repairs match exactly.
