DIY vs Professional Kitchen Respray

An honest comparison, including what DIY actually costs.

A DIY kitchen respray costs €150 to €400 in materials plus hire, and takes most people a full week of evenings and weekends. A professional respray costs €700 to €3000 and takes 1 to 3 days. The real difference is preparation and primer choice, which is why most DIY failures are peeling rather than poor colour.

What DIY really costs

Paint, primer, filler, abrasives, masking, sheeting and sprayer hire add up to €150 to €400 for an average kitchen. The larger cost is time, because doors need to be prepared, primed and given two coats with drying between each.

If it has to be redone, the old coating must come off first, which is a longer job than the original spray.

Where DIY jobs usually go wrong

The failures we are called out to repair fall into the same few categories.

  • No primer, or a general primer on laminate or vinyl doors
  • Grease left around the hob and kettle, so the coating lifts there first
  • Too heavy a coat, giving runs on vertical door faces
  • Doors rehung before the coating has hardened, leaving pressure marks
  • Overspray through the rest of the house from an unsealed room

When DIY is a fair choice

A single wardrobe, a utility room or a rental kitchen you plan to replace soon are all reasonable DIY jobs. A main family kitchen you want to look right for the next decade is not where to learn spraying.
