Can I Paint My Kitchen Cabinets Myself?
What DIY cabinet painting really involves, and when it is worth doing.
You can paint kitchen cabinets yourself, and on a small kitchen with timber doors it can work well. Expect two to three weekends of work, around €150 to €300 in materials, and a finish that shows some brush or roller texture. Laminate, wrapped and high gloss doors are where DIY attempts most often fail through poor adhesion.
What the job actually involves
Preparation is most of the work and it does not change whether you do it or we do. Doors and hardware off and labelled, everything degreased, every face hand keyed, filler where needed, then primer matched to the material and at least two topcoats with drying time between each.
Where DIY attempts usually go wrong
Almost every failure we are called to fix comes from the same handful of causes.
- Grease not fully removed, so the primer never bonds
- The wrong primer on laminate, vinyl or thermofoil
- No stain block on oak, so tannin bleeds through the topcoat
- Wall paint used instead of a cabinet coating
- Coats applied too thick, leaving runs and a soft finish
- Doors refitted before the coating has hardened
When to call a sprayer instead
If your doors are laminate, vinyl wrapped, thermofoil or high gloss, or if the kitchen is large, professional spraying is the safer choice. A full kitchen respray runs €700 to €3000, takes 1 to 3 days and leaves no brush texture on the door faces.
