The Best Colours for Dark Kitchens

What to spray a north facing or low light kitchen so it lifts instead of closing in.

In a dark or north facing kitchen, use warm off whites, soft creams or pale greige rather than cool brilliant white, which reads grey in low light. Keep wall units pale, use a soft satin finish to bounce light, and reserve any deeper colour for base units or the island.

Warm, not cool

Cool whites and blue greys need direct sunlight to look crisp. In a north facing Irish kitchen they turn flat and grey. Warm off whites, soft creams and warm greige carry weak light much better and make the room feel comfortable rather than cold.

Use finish as well as colour

A soft satin sheen reflects more light than a dead matt, without the glare and fingerprint problems of high gloss. In a dark kitchen that difference is noticeable, especially on wall units near the window.

Fix the lighting at the same time

Under cabinet lighting transforms a dark worktop more than any colour choice. If you are respraying, it is the ideal moment to add it, along with warmer bulbs at around 2700 to 3000 kelvin so the new colour is seen in the light it was chosen for.
