How to tell a tired finish from a kitchen that genuinely needs replacing.

Respraying is the right call when the units are structurally sound but the finish has gone: yellowed cream or varnish, worn patches at the handles and hob, chipped edges, a colour that dates the room, or a kitchen that no longer matches a new floor or worktop. 1. The colour has yellowed

Cream and white doors yellow with age, heat and sunlight, and varnished timber goes orange. It happens so slowly that most people only see it when a new appliance or a fresh wall colour goes in beside it.

The doors either side of the hob and the ones you open twenty times a day wear first. Grease, steam and hands take the finish back, and no amount of cleaning brings it back once the surface is gone.

3. Chipped and lifting edges

Laminate and vinyl wrapped doors chip at the corners and lift along the top edge above a dishwasher or kettle. Small damage is repaired and filled before spraying, which is part of the preparation rather than an extra.

4. The colour dates the room

Orange oak, beech and high gloss cream all read as a particular decade. The layout can be perfect and the units sound while the colour is doing all the ageing.
